While The Bluebird Cafe is best-known as a mecca for songwriters, it has also been home to a weekly blues institution for more than 40 years. Blue Monday has been running continuously at the venerable Green Hills nightclub since 1984. For most of that time, the series featured a number of bands fronted by the late guitarist and songwriter Mike Henderson. But since Henderson’s passing in 2023, keyboardist Kevin McKendree, who played in Henderson’s band for more than two decades, has led the blues outfit that appears at the venue every Monday evening. “We really try to respect the tradition of it, and especially Mike Henderson, and we play some of his songs every Monday,” McKendree tells the Scene. “There are things about it that we’ve kept the same, and the main thing really is just the spirit of it, which is to have fun.” In addition to McKendree, the current Blue Monday band features his son Yates McKendree on guitar and lead vocals, Steve Mackey on bass and George Sluppick on drums. Occasionally, the band will have special guests sit in with them, such as guitarist Billy Gibbons, keyboardist Reese Wynans, guitarist Sean McDonald or vocalist Jonell Mosser.
