Festival season in Tennessee rolls on with Muddy Roots, the do-it-yourself gig that doubles as an overnight playground for fans of punk bands, folk storytellers, metal howlers and rockabilly cats — all people who play rowdy songs about real-life shit. The three-night event takes place on JuneBug Boogie Ranch in rural Cookeville, where festivalgoers can set up camp for the extended weekend. Founded in 2010 and dubbed “the biggest little D.I.Y. fest in Tennessee,” this year’s festival features an eclectic lineup spanning three stages, with sets from punk staples Circle Jerks, garage band Shannon and the Clams, rockabilly singer Bloodshot Bill, sludge-metal band Monolord, McDonald’s-themed Black Sabbath tribute Mac Sabbath, and folk band The Builder and the Butchers, among dozens of other acts.
