Critic's Pick — Studio Ghibli Fest: 'Princess Mononoke'

So often, seeing a film in theaters is an experience available only upon its release, but Studio Ghibli Fest is continuing to bring the legendary studio’s movies back to the big screens. This week, Princess Mononoke returns to theaters, bringing the story of Ashitaka — a young prince afflicted by a cursed attack and searching for a cure — to life. Ashitaka becomes entangled in a fierce conflict between an ancient forest — home of wolf goddess Princess Mononoke — and a growing human settlement in need of resources, home of industrialist Lady Eboshi. The film highlights the importance of coexistence between humanity and nature through the lens of war. Grim imagery of brown water, pouring blood and damaged creatures, all drastically contrary to most of Hayao Miyazaki’s previous work, drive the message home. Princess Mononoke gives no clear answer to the turmoil, instead leaving moviegoers reflecting on their role in nature.
