Tommy-belcourt

Earlier this year, IMAX brought back Ken Russell’s 1975 all-star adaptation of The Who’s rock-opera opus Tommy for a two-night run. I can only imagine how gotdamn insane it must’ve been for audiences to see this maximalist musical mindfuck, with eternally smooth-chested Who frontman Roger Daltrey as the titular “deaf, dumb and blind kid,” played/laid out on a giant IMAX screen. But given that IMAX auditoriums also have speakers placed behind the screen, I’m guessing the sound was just as awesome as when the film first dropped, when theaters had to be equipped with a behind-the-screen fifth speaker so every screening could have that “Quintaphonic Sound.” (I wonder if the ol’ Belle Meade Theatre had that setup when it played there back in the day.) Even though they don’t have secret speakers set up in their auditoriums, the folks at the Belcourt will close its quadrilogy salute to the late British filmmaker with a certain-to-be-loud, Music City Mondays screening of his most commercially successful film.

8 p.m. at the Belcourt

2102 Belcourt Ave.
