Here’s a bulletproof date night idea: Dinner and a show at City Winery with one of the most sophisticated songwriters on tour this season — Rufus Wainwright. Born in New York and raised in Montreal, Wainwright’s known for crafting ambitious and theatrical tunes, such as the fan-favorite 2007 number “Going to a Town,” his ever-popular take on Leonard Cohen’s timeless “Hallelujah” and the go-to 2001 track “Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk.” This weekend, Wainwright plays City Winery on a run of solo shows that include multinight stops in intimate rooms across North America. Wainwright’s career ranges from opera compositions to folk collaborations with Brandi Carlile and worlds of music in between. It’s not often that such a celebrated musician plays a stripped-back show in a room built for enjoying up-close performances filled with storytelling from trusted songwriters.
