Critic's Pick: Guilty Pleasures

Twenty-five years ago this month, beloved ’80s tribute band Guilty Pleasures played their very first show. As founding member Mike Grimes remembers it, the gig was on a Thursday night at his former East Nashville club Slow Bar a couple weeks after 9/11. “I needed [a booking] for the calendar,” Grimes says. “But I remember that night also being booked for people to heal. … We had an American flag right behind the stage.” Guilty Pleasures will celebrate its 25th anniversary Saturday night at 3rd and Lindsley, and three of the people who were onstage that first night are still performing with the 16-piece group — Grimes (vocals), John Deaderick (keyboards) and Trisha Brantley (vocals). Another original member, Daniel Tashian, will appear with the group as a special guest vocalist. Guilty Pleasures have decided to call it quits later this year, so Saturday’s show will be their final appearance at the club that has been their primary home for nearly a decade. It will also be the last chance to catch them before a pair of farewell shows at The Basement East Thanksgiving weekend. In addition, the producers of the forthcoming documentary on the band, Feeling Guilty, will be on hand to offer fans one final opportunity to talk on camera about the group.
