In the 2020 Netflix documentary series Abstract: The Art of Design, artist Christoph Niemann says he gets suspicious whenever he’s having too good of a time while working. “It doesn’t bode well for the outcome,” he explains. But you’d never know it from his playful, witty drawings and prints. Take “The Secret,” which shows René Magritte’s famous “The Son of Man” from another angle — the green apple is actually biting down on the man’s nose. Niemann is perhaps best known for his New Yorker covers, and his Instagram account @abstractsunday has more than a million followers. For his second solo exhibition at ZieherSmith — and his first in Nashville, having previously shown at ZieherSmith’s New York location — the Berlin-based artist has taken over the Edgehill space with an immersive exhibition that includes custom wallpaper produced in collaboration with Minneapolis-based company Area Environments.
Through May 30 at ZieherSmith
