Thanks to director Kim Hannah and a committed group of volunteers, the birds at Exotic Avian Sanctuary of Tennessee have the best lives possible: fresh food, natural perches, enrichment and free flight in large indoor and outdoor aviaries. Caring for a hundred parrots is a demanding job, and Hannah has heroic resilience. She brings expertise and compassion to every task, whether it’s rehabilitating birds from hoarding cases, organizing emergency medical care or even catching a cockatoo strutting the sanctuary halls. I’m a former volunteer, and EAST is the reason I’m writing this while surrounded by six rescue parrots of my own.
