Cinderella is one of those classic tales that has inspired countless adaptations — from films to musicals, ballets, operas and even video games. So it was lovely to experience such a fresh approach with the premiere of Hip Hop Cinderella at the Nashville Children’s Theatre in April. Billed as “an intergalactic romp,” this imaginative new work follows Ella C, who loses her sneaker at the Hip Hop Ball and Rap Competition, sending her prince “on a quest throughout the stars.” With smart direction from Ernie Nolan, terrific design elements and some really fun performances, this Cinderella gave us a modern twist on happily-ever-after.
