Best New Monument

It’s hard to believe Tennessee women didn’t win the right to vote till 1920. But Alan LeQuire’s colossal sculpture of suffragists brings their struggle to life. Stand behind the bronze quintet — temporarily placed in front of the Parthenon — and see the powerful feminine gestures of encouragement. With figures of women holding hands and patting each other the back as they march toward their uncertain destiny, LeQuire’s sculpture tells a century-old story in a visual language that makes it feel like today.
