Best International Sporting Event

Forget the Olympics, with its prepackaged stories and international incidents outside the games (thanks, Ryan Lochte!) — Nashville played host to a better affair in May, the Bingham Cup. Named posthumously for Mark Bingham — one of the passengers who fought the 9/11 hijackers on Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania — the cup brought 1,300 players from gay and inclusive rugby teams from around the world to Nashville for a week of festivities and competition, and, of course, the Aussies took home the big prize. But the winner was the city, which got to host an event that showed just how ridiculous some of the state’s homophobia can be. STEVE CAVENDISH
