Being anointed the Voice of a Generation, a label that was affixed to indie singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers after the massive success of 2020’s Punisher, is surely overwhelming. It’s a big part of why it took more than six years to hear the follow-up, Lost Weekend, which was released in August. The sprawling 16-song LP feels like it took six years to make, for better (the beautiful, layered arrangements) and for worse (the 2016-era Bon Iver folktronica tracks, which I personally enjoyed, but others have rubbed up against). The album credits read like internet catnip. “Haunted” alone features Bridgers, tour opener Alex G, fellow boygenius members Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, pop-star whisperer Jack Antonoff, Stranger Things star Maya Hawke and Bridgers’ boyfriend (and my favorite comedian) Bo Burnham, among others. There are two types of albums I find endlessly re-listenable: lean, efficient rippers and expansive, experimental projects. This one is certainly the latter. If you’re one of the lucky fans who bought tickets to one of the two Nashville stops before both sold out, don your best skeleton wear for me.
