Established in 1984 by the groundbreaking choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Urban Bush Women has built its reputation on cultural expression and community engagement — blending theatrical dance and storytelling with social activism to “honor the rich traditions of the African diaspora.” You can catch this remarkable company this weekend, as Tennessee Performing Arts Center continues its Discovery Series with This Is Risk. Touching on themes of both past and present, This Is Risk delivers a marvelous collection of iconic works from Zollar — including the much-anticipated return of Shelter (which was first performed by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1992) and Batty Moves (a joyful celebration of the Black female form). Audiences can also look forward to experiencing Contemplations on Legacy, a new commission by longtime UBW collaborator and choreographer Vincent E. Thomas. Billed as “a vibrant celebration of resilience, creativity and community,” This Is Risk promises a powerful evening of dance.
7:30 p.m. at TPAC’s Polk Theater
