Back in January, The Social Club decided to take its swinging to Madison, setting off much protest from neighbors about the purported smut hut materializing in their midst. When Councilwoman Karen Bennett passed an ordinance rezoning the property, effectively blocking the club, the swingers decided to classify as a church instead. (Talk about the laying on of hands.) In late June, the new church was shut down by the fire marshal when a “social club event” was found taking place in the building before it had an occupancy permit or had undergone a final fire inspection. Several days later, the club’s previous location downtown went up in flames. This hot story keeps on giving.
