Best Day To Be At The County Clerk’s Office

Michael W. Bunch

Showing up at the County Clerk’s office to find a large crowd would normally be cause for disappointment, but not on this day in late June. That was the moment the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its landmark ruling that made marriage the right of any and every couple in the country — and same-sex couples in Nashville didn’t waste any time getting hitched. After some software was updated and paperwork amended, Nikki Von Haeger and Lauren Mesnard became the first same-sex couple to exercise the right in Nashville. They were followed by a line of others, who exchanged vows surrounded by family, friends, reporters and television cameras. Not the ceremony they imagined, perhaps, but few who were there will soon forget the blessed event.
