Elections can bring out the worst in people, and in the last set of elections, nowhere was this more true than in Oak Hill, the leafy satellite city better known for high-priced houses than high-profile campaigns. When the previous town board examined options for a commercial development — a first for Oak Hill — the reaction by residents was strong. Anonymous pro-development mailings and websites tried to smear candidate Heidi Campbell, accusing her of (gasp!) secular humanism and posing a threat to churches and schools. Campbell and her running mate won overwhelmingly, and the development died.
