Looking for a little break from reality? A heartwarming show to lift your spirits? Nashville Rep has you covered with Sister Act — opening this weekend at TPAC’s Polk Theater. Based on the 1992 hit film starring Whoopi Goldberg, this heavenly musical comedy follows the adventures of aspiring disco diva Deloris Van Cartier, who is placed in protective custody after witnessing her gangster boyfriend execute an informant. Forced to take shelter at a convent, she soon puts her unique musical talents to good use, shaking up the community’s struggling choir and discovering a renewed sense of purpose. It’s a fun, feel-good show, featuring a gospel, soul and disco score from Tony- and Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater. Directed by Jason Spelbring (with music direction by Sarah Michele Bailey), the show’s cast includes a host of Nashville favorites — starting with Meggan Utech as Deloris Van Cartier and Megan Murphy Chambers as Mother Superior, plus Shelby Talbert, Katie Bruno, Carolyn German, Jermaine L. Pearson, Justin Marriel Boyd, LaDarra Jackel, Anita Barone, Mia Jones, Joy Pointe, Samuel Whited and more. And audiences can look forward to a bit of divine intervention from choreographer Joi Ware.
