Under-The-Silver-Lake-SP-Belcourt

Unceremoniously dumped by A24, misunderstood by critics, and ignored by general audiences upon its initial release, David Robert Mitchell’s Under the Silver Lake is a true modern cult classic. DRM’s breakthrough, the inventive horror hit It Follows, is a flashy, stylistic exercise with a killer premise that shoots you out of a cannon into the opening scene and never stops moving (literally). Under the Silver Lake, meanwhile, is a slow-burn mystery with a downright inscrutable plot. I understand why executives struggled to market it, but I wish they had tried a little harder. Watching Andrew Garfield’s hapless charisma vacuum/amateur detective/future manosphere podcaster Sam shuffle through a Byzantine conspiracy is exactly what it feels like to be online in 2026. Like Chinatown distilled through a Reddit thread, Under the Silver Lake takes you further and further down the L.A. rabbit hole. Eventually, the only person left to examine is yourself.
