You might think My Chemical Romance would take the easy path with their Long Live The Black Parade tour, which commemorates the album that still inspires swoopy-haired teens and emo adults two decades after its release. The album’s original 2007 tour brought era-defining fashion and creepy but cool over-the-top theatrics, including blimps that would rise over the crowd during the album’s title song. Would it have been so bad for the band to just do that again, 20 years later? We’ll never know. Instead, MCR cooked up an elaborate new world for this tour that features, among other things, the fictional nation of “Draag,” a cast of characters including the Grand Immortal Dictator, the constructed language of Keposhka, and an overarching narrative that progresses with each stop on tour — plus new musical additions to Black Parade tracks for Gerard Way and company to blast out in their black-colored marching band outfits. In an era when nostalgia tours and movie remakes can amount to easy dollar signs, you have to tip your cap to MCR for taking a big swing and trying to reinterpret, not just replay or repackage, their most popular work.
