I’m constantly harping about how Nashville needs a gallery dedicated to contemporary photography, and an institutional space that collects and is dedicated to contemporary art in general. Our scene is fortunate to have more galleries and institutional support than we used to, but a lot of the best programming we see in town still comes from independent artist-curators who find ways to get their work in front of audiences without waiting for the slow wheel of progress and the fickle finger of fortune. One case in point is What Is the Shape of Your Soul?, which opens this week during the Downtown Arts District Alliance Second Saturday Art Crawl at Arcade Gallery 56. The exhibition explores the relationship between our individual personas and our collective human consciousness vis-à-vis photography as well as sculpture and sound art. What Is the Shape of Your Soul? includes work from Anders Juhl, Michelle Eistrup, Caroline Allison, Sai Clayton and Marlen Lugo, who is also the exhibition’s curator.
