Critic's Pick — Jennifer Haston: 'Seasons of the Sun'

Fiber arts are often dismissed among fine-art types, but that’s a mistake — there’s a wild world of textures and ingenuity to explore. If you’re in Nashville, checking out Jennifer Haston’s quilts should be a priority. Elephant Gallery’s exhibition of her work, Seasons of the Sun, includes several of her quilts, which are dizzyingly complex yet somehow harmonious. She combines the overwhelming colors and patterns of a glitchy computer screen — it reminds me a little bit of those hallucinogenic Google DeepDream images, but with a Gee’s Bend authenticity. Other highlights include scale replicas of chard leaves, which look lacy and prehistoric. Haston also works as an instructor at the nonprofit Friends Life Community, a local spot that provides support, education and community for adults with disabilities. In Elephant’s hallway gallery, she curated a selection of works made by her students. This is a great chance to see the full range of a working artist’s life.
