Critic's Pick — Musician Spotlight: Audley Freed

Sunday, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s weekly Musician Spotlight series will feature acclaimed rock guitarist and songwriter Audley Freed. For more than a decade, Freed has been the lead guitarist in Sheryl Crow’s band, but prior to that he worked with a number of well-known artists including stints with The Black Crowes, Peter Frampton, Jakob Dylan, Joe Perry, The Chicks and Trigger Hippy. He has also recorded with Kenny Chesney, Alison Krauss, Robben Ford, P.F. Sloan, Rodney Crowell and James McMurtry. His songs have been cut by Train, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gary Allan, Chris Robinson, Gov’t Mule, The Wreckers and Gavin DeGraw. Freed first hit the national radar in the early to mid-’90s with his band Cry of Love, which scored a No. 1 Mainstream Rock hit in 1993 with a song he co-wrote, “Peace Pipe.” Freed tells the Scene he will perform some of his own songs, including from his Cry of Love days, as well as some songs he played on that were written by other people. “I’ll put together some things and try to tell some interesting stories surrounding those things,” he says. “Then I enjoy taking questions from people.”
