Bruce, Brahms & Schumann

Last month, Ireland’s esteemed Westport Festival of Chamber Music presented a huge lineup, including the world premiere of David Bruce’s “States of Glory” for clarinet, marimba and cello. Now local audiences can experience this fascinating new work, as Chamber Music City opens its inaugural season with Bruce, Brahms and Schumann. Bringing together the considerable talents of percussionist (and founding artistic director) Ji Hye Jung, clarinetist Jose Franch-Ballester and cellist Clancy Newman, “States of Glory” offers a rather daring exploration of American folk tunes that “reflects on themes of freedom and hope in the midst of America’s 250th birthday.” Composer David Bruce will be on hand to discuss the piece with TN 250 coordinator Carrie Tipton prior to the performance. The program also includes Osvaldo Golijov’s “Mariel,” Clara Schumann’s “Nocturne” (featuring pianist Gloria Chien) and Johannes Brahms’ Clarinet Trio in A Minor. It’s an intriguing lineup — and a promising start for one of Nashville’s newest chamber ensembles.
