Based on the same light novel that inspired Doug Liman’s 2014 film Edge of Tomorrow, the newly released All You Need Is Kill follows soldiers Rita (Ai Mikami) and Keiji (Natsuki Hanae) in a future in which a dormant alien flower named Darol awakens, causing creatures to slaughter everyone at the nearby base. But Rita soon realizes that when she dies, the day starts over. She lives, fights and dies — over and over — in an attempt to break the time loop. Made by Studio 4°C — the company that also worked on Masaaki Yuasa’s Mind Game (2004) — All You Need Is Kill uses a blended 2D/3D animation style accompanied with a bright color palette to bring a visual feast; the fight scenes are stylish and fast-paced, with the death loops edited into rapid-fire action sequences. The story will be familiar to fans of the Tom Cruise-starring Edge of Tomorrow, butit offers a new perspective and is drenched in a neon-flora aesthetic.
Opening Jan. 15 at Regal and AMC locations
