Best Nonprofit Power Mover

In April, Liz Veyhl’s Small World Yoga opened the doors of Nashville’s first community yoga studio — on Music Row, no less. What happens under that roof is important, but even more important is what it enables. The nonprofit charges just $5 per class, and those funds help underwrite free classes around town where yoga wouldn’t otherwise be available, such as the Davidson County jail, public schools and libraries. Veyhl first was exposed to the idea that “yoga can happen anywhere” while in Kenya with the Africa Yoga Project in 2013. The next year she founded Small World Yoga. The city was clearly in need of such deep breaths and deep stretches. In 2017 alone the organization doubled in size, going from serving 30 partner locations to 57; by August 2018 that number jumped again to 73. More than 120 volunteer yoga teachers instruct more than 1,700 people each month. Quite a reach. MARGARET LITTMAN
