Followers of Nashville’s tall-building scene often lament that the city’s skyline is marked by boxy buildings often lacking decorative elements. The elegant JW Marriott in SoBro is an exception. The brainchild of developer Turnberry Associates and designed by Arquitectonica — both based in South Florida — the oval tower offers a protruding curved lip near its crown and addresses the Eighth-and-Demonbreun intersection like a massive watercraft or space ship about to slice through that busy crossroads. A wavy roof lies atop the hotel’s porte-cochere along Eighth, with its Demonbreun side offering public art. Up next: a private green space to pleasantly counter the boldness of the skyscraper’s form and function. WILLIAM WILLIAMS
