Akebu-Lan Images on Jefferson Street offers its customers the total package in terms of the black experience. There’s a wide range of titles in numerous categories by authors famous, emerging and obscure. And there are many more things you won’t find in other bookstores, whether it’s African-American newspapers, educational materials, gifts or apparel with distinctive and positive Afrocentric messages. Akebu-Lan also joins forces with area black colleges Fisk, Tennessee State and Meharry to bring top scholars and authors to town, for events in the store and on those campuses. They participate in book fairs and special events for black authors and readers in other cities, while maintaining ties with the influential African-American Literature Book Club, the nation’s largest online community of black authors and readers. Plus there are periodic special events for local authors and performers that reaffirm the stores’ standing as a cultural hot spot for discerning fans of important African-American and African cultural personalities and events.
