For all the aches and pain in this year’s school board race, the sitting board in 2016 actually voted unanimously on something and hired a promising director of schools. While it took the board two attempts and a year’s time, Shawn Joseph seems to be a good pick. Joseph immediately placed a moratorium on hiring and firing before he even started the gig, and did a major sweep of struggling schools. Time will tell, but the enthusiasm for him has spilled over to the board, giving a sometimes contentious body something to unite behind. AMANDA HAGGARD
