Best Answer to a Longstanding Nashville Question

One of the longest-standing rumors about historical Nashville is that there are a series of tunnels beneath downtown used for various purposes — to keep things hidden from law enforcement, to move bodies and dry goods out of the public eye, etc. But until Tony Gonzalez went digging around under old buildings, the official answer to whether there are tunnels was “No.” Surprise, then, because Gonzalez found some tunnels and some things that sure looked like they might have been tunnels at one point. He climbed across steep river banks, crawled through ancient dirty basements and wiggled down holes, and in answering the question, taught us all a lot about the city and its history. His reporting was a master class in how to track down a story and how to bring it to life for his audience. BETSY PHILLIPS
