For a city so rich in creative capital, no group gets as tough a break as our local authors. Songwriters have open-mic nights, visual artists have monthly crawls, but what platform exists for discovering Nashville’s latest novel? Enter Atomic Nashville, a cozy East Side mom-and-pop storefront with a singular goal: to promote local books. After consulting with Baltimore’s Atomic Books — the venerable bookstore where John Waters receives all his fan mail — Nashville transplants Dan and Kerry Balog brought their dream to life. Beyond their stellar collection of graphic novels and vinyl records, Atomic’s shelves are packed with books by regional authors of all genres, and even the walls proudly display artwork from featured Nashville artists. Atomic has equal clout as a badass neighborhood bookstore and speaker box for the artistic community, and its commitment to both has me looking forward to the next chapter. MATT FOX
