Concert documentary You Got Gold: A Celebration of John Prine considers the beloved late songwriter in a new light, centering less on the story of his life and more on his impact on the people around him. On and around the stage at a 2022 tribute concert at Prine’s favorite venue, the Ryman Auditorium, a stellar lineup reflects on his funny, kindhearted character: Tyler Childers recounts how Prine always carried around a Dairy Queen coupon in case it was someone’s birthday and he needed to get a cake, and the late Bob Weir remembers trying to dine vegan at Prine’s favorite greasy spoon, Brown’s Diner. It’s a heartwarming angle, interspersed with musical tributes like The War and Treaty’s powerhouse rendition of “Knockin’ Through Your Screen Door” and a Deadified “Great Rain” from Weir. As part of Music City Mondays and Nashville: A City on Film, You Got Gold holds court at the Belcourt for three showings this week — each with a conversation with Prine’s widow, Fiona Whelan Prine, to follow.
