One of the exciting parts about living in Nashville is the opportunity to see new pieces of art before the rest of the world does. A new original musical, One Step at a Time, offers a chance to do just that. The musical, produced by locally based music curriculum company QuaverEd, promises high production value: a 27-member local cast, 20 original songs and a live orchestra, plus choreography and animated sets. QuaverEd seeks to teach students not only core subjects, but also resiliency, social skills and resolving conflicts. One Step at a Time explores this by following a school guidance counselor who seeks to change school culture. The influence of some NYC theater veterans, as well as local producer Holly Shepherd and director Brian Hull, polished this five-year project, taking it from a handful of educational songs to a full-scale musical that previewed at Franklin’s Battle Ground Academy earlier this year. Hull says, “It’s less Les Mis and more Rocketman.”
