You may not immediately recognize the name Blossom Dearie, but this remarkable jazz vocalist, pianist and composer was widely recognized as “a musician’s musician.” Known for her light and airy voice (some called it “girlish”), the diminutive Dearie charmed everyone from Miles Davis to Bill Evans with songs like “Once Upon a Summertime” and “They Say It’s Spring.” She also won over a generation of school kids, lending her distinctive voice to the 1970s educational series Schoolhouse Rock! (Who could forget bangers like “Figure Eight,” “Mother Necessity” and “Unpack Your Adjectives”?) You can revisit some of Dearie’s most enduring hits this weekend as local jazz favorite Monica Ramey returns to the Nashville Jazz Workshop with Blossom’s Blues: Monica Ramey Sings the Songs of Blossom Dearie. This marks the second installment of Ramey’s yearlong residency at NJW, and she’ll be joined by The Lori Mechem Quartet. It’s sure to be a great evening for jazz lovers, and fans will also want to keep an eye out for her July concert — Over the Rainbow: Monica Ramey Sings the Music of Harold Arlen.
