Showmance was one of the very first musicals I ever saw at The Theater Bug, and from the beginning I was hooked. Sweet and funny, this charming little show has been a favorite among both performers and audiences since its debut back in 2013. You can check it out this weekend, as Showmance returns to the Nashville School of the Arts’ Roxy Theater. Written by Bug founder Cori Anne Laemmel, with music by Laemmel, Eric Fritsch and Laura Matula, Showmance offers something of a love letter to the magic of theater. The story follows Charlotte and Henry — a pair of misfits who audition for a summer musical, but end up discovering “a community, a sense of purpose and a place where they can truly be themselves.” Directed by Laemmel, with music direction by Matula and choreography by Bakari J. King, the show’s cast features a super-talented group of young performers. And audiences can also look forward to set design by Diana DeGarmo and costumes by Melodie Madden Adams. Hilarious and heartwarming, Showmance reminds us that “the stage is where you fit in, because you stand out.”
