Downhill Racer

After you’ve checked out The Candidate, you might want to make it a two-fer and also go see Downhill Racer — the other Robert Redford-Michael Ritchie joint. This 1970 sports drama (scripted by novelist James Salter) has Redford gliding through the slopes as a cocky, competitive skier working his way up the U.S. Ski Team (led by Gene Hackman’s business-minded coach). Prepare to get altitude sickness as Ritchie and his crew capture breathtaking racing sequences done in the chilliest (and chillest) global locales. Out of all the movies Redford has done, this one will very likely have you hoping it gets an IMAX re-release one day. It would also play great on a double bill with the Chalamet-Safdie pingpong crash-out Marty Supreme, since they’re both about self-centered athletes from small-time surroundings, desperate and determined to become romancing, jet-setting, superstar champions. Downhill Racer is just quieter and less Jewish.
