Generation-of-Vipers

Knoxville’s Josh Holt has been a part of the subterranean Tennessee music community for more than a quarter-century, playing various instruments in multiple projects, both short-lived and long-running. He’s outlasted most of his peers, who long ago abandoned DIY basement shows for the suburban lives of adulthood. But Holt never suffered the adult crash. Since 2004, the singer/guitarist has been fronting Generation of Vipers. The mega power trio’s 2024 LP Guilt Shrine, mixed by Converge’s Kurt Ballou and mastered by From Ashes Rise’s Brad Boatright, is the fifth full-length by the East Tennesseans. GoV recalls a lot of the darker, heavier music that drove the underground in Holt’s formative years — acts like His Hero Is Gone, Neurosis and Isis — who crafted music full of downtuned, glacial riffs and bleak melodies that balance their heaviness with high-minded songcraft. With amplifier knobs cranked all the way up and quasi-spiritual lyrics bursting from the singer’s gut, GoV lives up to the high standards set by their metal-punk forefathers. These Vipers don’t tour much, so don’t squander the rare opportunity to catch them live. Local hessians Mogil and Vaelravyn open the show, so get there on time.
