It’s been more than five years since Bobby Bare Jr. played his own show in Nashville, but that will change Friday night when he headlines a bill at The Basement. Bare’s long absence was a byproduct of his decision a decade ago to put his own career on hold and accept an invitation to become the rhythm guitarist for his “favorite rock band” Guided by Voices, a position he still holds. GBV is currently on a break, which gives Bare a chance to perform his own music. “Now I get to do my new job, which is my old job,” he jokes by phone before a gig in New York. “I’m really having fun doing my own music again.” Although he hasn’t released an album of his own since 2014’s Undefeated, he’s been writing regularly and has a lot of new songs that have never been released. “I’ll be playing some new stuff for sure,” he tells the Scene. “I’m sitting here in Brooklyn practicing new songs for tonight at Lucinda’s.” Bare will be accompanied Friday by guitarist Matthew Paige, drummer Richie Townsend and multi-instrumentalist Robbie Crowell, who will play keyboards, bass and sax. Danny Malone, who recently moved to Nashville from Austin, will open the show with a solo acoustic set.
