Gemma New, London, 31 October 2024

The Nashville Symphony is ringing in the new year — and honoring Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s 270th birthday — with an evening of “grandeur, invention and musical fireworks.” The program opens with Beethoven’s powerful Egmont Overture, a piece marked by themes so bold and heroic that it actually served as an unofficial anthem for the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Audiences also can look forward to the return of acclaimed pianist Conrad Tao, who will perform John Adams’ Century Rolls, promising “a genre-bending tribute to the golden age of piano music.” And finally, New Zealand’s rising conductor Gemma New will lead the Nashville Symphony in the dramatic Symphony No. 41 (aka Jupiter). Completed in 1788, the Jupiter Symphony was Mozart’s final symphony — and deemed by many to be one of his crowning achievements. The name certainly reflects all the wonder and majesty of the piece, which is significant in its use of counterpoints — particularly in the stunning finale, which brilliantly weaves together five melodies simultaneously.
