In the past 10 years, Chance the Rapper has fallen out of fashion. Following the release of the masterful Coloring Book, Chance was riding high with commercial success, critical acclaim and a Grammy for Best Rap Album. But many fans soured on his sound on his follow-up release, 2019’s The Big Day, the ultimate Wife Guy album. Last year’s Star Line got fans back on board, but the massive momentum he had built in the 2010s never quite returned. The Chicago rapper will be at the Ryman on Sunday for a 10th anniversary tour celebrating Coloring Book, and I hope it’s an opportunity for folks to rediscover just how special that album is. The songs are great on wax, but the live versions are arguably even better, as Chance’s coalition of Chi-Town musicians get downright spiritual onstage. From the joyously raucous “No Problem” to the devastating “Same Drugs” and the wistful “Summer Friends,” I’ll be rapping along. New Orleans raptivist La Reezy opens.
