When Todd Stephens’ 2001 directorial debut Gypsy 83 started making the gay/lesbian film festival rounds 25 years ago, the queer filmmaker cut his story of two Stevie Nicks-loving goth besties (Sara Rue, Birkett Turton) who flee their podunk Ohio town and hit the road to attend the Night of 1000 Stevies show in New York, down to a digestible, 94-minute form. But Stephens has gone back and assembled a lengthier cut, clocking in at 138 minutes, complete with previously deleted and extended scenes and a soundtrack that now includes tunes from such goth-friendly bands as Echo & the Bunnymen and the Cocteau Twins. So of course the Belcourt has booked it for a Music City Mondays showing. Don’t forget to get there early for a pre-screening Stevie-Off, hosted by Belcourt staff member/musician Jessica Breanne. Show up in your best Stevie Nicks look, and you’ll have 10 seconds to share your Stevie impression; the audience will crown the winner.
