Armadillos, tumbleweeds and roadside diners line the long, lonely stretch of Interstate 40 that connects Nashville to Southern California. It’s no coincidence that the east-west route is the stuff of country songs, so many of which have been written between the two tightly bonded music regions spanned by genre-defining artists like Johnny Cash, Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris.

The-Palomino

Mule Kick Records captures the synergy in The Palomino, a new documentary centered on the iconic North Hollywood honky-tonk of the same name. Equal parts love letter and music history lesson, the film underscores how independent music venues can nurture and bind communities over decades. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum welcomes California to the table this week with an exclusive screening and panel, featuring musicians Rosie Flores, Tony Booth and James Intveld.

2:30 p.m. at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Ford Theater
