Critic's Pick: Which Side? A Protest Music Teach-Out

Eastside Bowl will host a one-of-a-kind event Sept. 14 in The ’58: Which Side? A Protest Music Teach-Out. The event is the brainchild of Boston Globe music journalist James Sullivan and based on his book, Which Side Are You On?: 20th Century American History in 100 Protest Songs. Sullivan, who has helmed more than a year’s worth of monthly Which Side? nights in Boston, will co-host the event with Nashville activist Greg O’Loughlin. “My book is named after the classic protest song,” Sullivan tells the Scene. “We’re all in this together as far as I’m concerned … against the AI oligarchs, the tech bros and the mega billionaires who don’t pay taxes at the expense of all of us. That’s the job of protest music — to show how all justice-loving Americans should feel like we’re in this together.” Which Side? will feature six announced songwriters — Rissi Palmer, Mary Gauthier, Keshia Bailey, Jon Latham, Anne McCue and Rachel Rodriquez — and a few mystery guests. Each artist will perform two protest songs — one traditional and one original — with accompaniment by the house band, The 2020hz. The night will also include a special guest speaker, New York Times bestselling author and songwriter Alice Randall, and will spotlight the Nashville nonprofit Brooklyn Heights Community Garden.
