The 1984 anti-noir Repo Man is the second Golden State-set cult whatzit that’ll be making a midnight appearance at the Belcourt this weekend. With his directorial debut, maverick Englishman Alex Cox (Sid and Nancy) gives us his own snotty, skeevy, occasionally silly view of the City of Angels, featuring a snarling soundtrack (Iggy Pop, Fear, Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies, etc.) that most likely introduced your parents to the L.A. punk scene. A pre-Breakfast Club Emilio Estevez stars as an aimless youth who joins a crew of auto reposessors (he gets mentored by a coke-snorting Harry Dean Stanton) who pick up cars around a town that’s both strange (anyone seen that Chevy with the aliens in the trunk?) and soul-numbingly generic (good luck buying any brand-name shit around here!). Programmer Zack Hall will be around to not only give a pre-screening intro to this gleefully gonzo flick, but also have his Press Play Video pop-up set up in the parking lot at 10 p.m.
Midnight at the Belcourt
