Never have two sequels been so different yet equally great. Alien, Ridley Scott’s groundbreaking 1979 sci-fi masterpiece, is a quiet, working-class slasher in space. Aliens, James Cameron’s just-as-fantastic follow-up, is a bombastic Vietnam War allegory housed inside an action-thriller. Despite crash-landing in theaters 40 years ago, Aliens still looks incredible. The sets are gorgeously horrific, and the creature design is some of the most innovative in film history. Never has a franchise blockbuster looked so goopy. Luckily for local film fans, one of the people most responsible for the film’s iconic look — makeup and special effects artist John Rosengrant — will take part in The Franklin Theatre’s excellent Filmmakers in Franklin series on Sunday. Rosengrant will discuss the film’s top-notch VFX work after a screening of the film.
7 p.m. at The Franklin Theatre
419 Main St., Franklin
