Ken Russell’s The Devils returned to theaters this month in a restored 4K cut. The scandal the 1971 film created still echoes in today’s culture wars, and the spectacle of sexually possessed nuns, holy hysteria and church corruption is a reminder that Catholic-coded kink is trending. Consider Coven, a “haunt meets nocturnal femme concert” happening on what Michiganders know as Devil’s Night. Coven weaves genre-bending performance art into a live music showcase from creative director Wyatt Scott, a veteran of local haunted houses and Nashville Shakes. It’s also a benefit, with proceeds supporting the American Red Cross, Healthy and Free Tennessee, and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, an order of 21st-century queer “nuns” who’ll be attending in full drag. Host Karii Jaye presides over a lineup including Flight Attendant, Anastasia Elliot, Crystal Rose, Kitty Coen, Weeping and Arily Michele.
