Blue Room Chess Club Tournament

If you’re a student of tactics like forks, undermining and discovered attacks, The Blue Room’s first Chess Club Tournament just might be for you. The great game of tactics and strategy includes the methods I listed above, and I’m not the first person to observe that chess offers a great opportunity to learn how to think in multiple dimensions and create a winning plan of attack. The great chess masters — Bobby Fischer, Judit Polgár and Garry Kasparov come to mind — have something to teach us about how to go through life as competitors and learners who can visualize the big picture while attending to the most precise details. The games kick off Friday at 7 p.m. with free play until 8, followed by the tournament, which begins at 8:30. It’s $10 at the door to participate in the competition, which should test your ability to implement those double attacks and wily moves that mark you as a true adept of the game. Why be a pawn in someone else’s game when you can play your own? The prizes include a trophy, merchandise and tickets to future shows at The Blue Room.

7 p.m. at The Blue Room at Third Man Records

623 Seventh Ave. S.
