Earlier this year radio programming consultant Keith Hill boldly claimed that female country musicians are just tomatoes (aka accessories) in a man’s salad. Thankfully, not everyone in our music community is as dim-witted as Hill. For more than a decade, Southern Girls Rock ’n’ Roll Camp has worked hard to ensure there are plenty of “tomatoes” in our future by giving girls ages 10 to 17 a safe, encouraging place to learn all kinds of music-related skills. And this summer, the Murfreesboro-based program finally expanded into Nashville. I guess Hill never heard of caprese salad.
