"Sea of Fear" by Matt Lloyd

Nashville-based artist Matt Lloyd borrows from the 1970s horror and adventure comics of his childhood, distilling the intensity of their chills and thrills onto surreal canvases where their grade-school aesthetics become phantasmagorical. Lloyd’s colorful palette and heavy line work will have Gen-X gallerygoers recalling the inky perfume of new issues of comic faves bursting from the racks at comic shops, drugstores and supermarkets. But Lloyd’s not happy merely indulging in nostalgia, and it’s his weird and sometimes disturbing compositional remixes that make his Strange Adventures more than just a retro rehash. The show is curated by Reggie Wayne and will be on display for the remainder of the month.

Opening reception 5-9 p.m., through March 31 at Rock Wall Gallery

438 Houston St.
