LoisLowry

Thanks to novels like The Giver and Number the Stars, author Lois Lowry’s work has become a staple among late-elementary and middle school bookshelves. Her books are not only captivating stories but also provide young readers with their first introduction to heavy subjects like the Holocaust and the atrocities of World War II. Lowry explores themes of morality, individuality and the questioning of authority — some of which have led to her work being the target of book bans in schools across the U.S. Now Nashvillians have the chance to hear from the Newbery Medal-winning author as Lowry is set to give a keynote address focusing on the inspiration behind her 1989 novel Number the Stars, which follows a Jewish family’s escape from Copenhagen during World War II. Hosted by the Tennessee Holocaust Commission, the event is free, and attendees can register at tnholcom.org. Parnassus Books will be selling copies of Lowry’s work, and she will be available for a book signing.
