Buddy Guy, one of the last of the legendary Chicago bluesmen, turned 90 on July 30 and is celebrating that milestone with the Buddy Guy 90 Tour, which makes a stop at Ryman Auditorium Aug. 19. Earlier this year, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer picked up his ninth Grammy award for his most recent release, 2025’s Ain’t Done With the Blues. Wednesday’s show will be a homecoming of sorts for Guy, who has worked extensively in Nashville over the past two decades with producer-drummer Tom Hambridge. He recorded his past seven albums here with Hambridge at the helm, all of which went to No. 1 on the Billboard Blues Albums chart. In addition to producing his records, Hambridge usually tours with Guy, although studio commitments kept him from joining the blues legend on this tour. Even so, he tells the Scene he may sit in with Guy’s band at the Ryman. “I just love playing with him,” Hambridge says. “He’s just a beast when he’s out there, playing 100-and-some-odd shows a year. … It’s a beautiful thing and keeps him young.” Guy will be accompanied at the Ryman by guitarist Ric Hall, bassist Orlando Wright, keyboardist Dan Souvigny and new drummer Melvin Carlisle. Blues torchbearer Christone “Kingfish” Ingram will open.
